Keith Marischal House

Keith Marischal House near Humbie, East Lothian was the ancestral home of the Keiths. Although Dunnottar was the principal house of the Keiths, Keith Marischal still played an important role for them. Practically, it was in handy distance to the royal court if it was in Edinburgh, and symbolically it expressed the origins of the family.

The modern Edwardian façade incorporates only a tiny fraction of a sixteenth century wing of the old Palace. A description of the ruins from the mid-eighteenth century suggests that this house had the largest private great hall in Scotland, only surpassed in size by the Great Hall of Stirling Palace. I commissioned a geophysical survey, having secured funding from the Castles Studies Trust to explore this. Despite an annoyingly well-built nineteenth century driveway, we identified substantial underground structures which require further exploration. Hopefully one day we can explore these further.
